Calling all barbecue cooks and pitmasters!

You’ve seen it on television, and on Saturday Sept. 8, Kansas City Barbecue Society competition comes to Coquille for the Second Annual Smoke on the Water Barbecue Competition and Music Festival.

The public is invited as contestants take to their cook spaces in pursuit of Kansas City Barbecue Society points and $2200 in prize money. Open to the public at 9 a.m., judging begins at noon. The public may purchase barbecue samples from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.

The day’s events include the live music by charlie freak and Next Exit, men’s bare legs contest, pie eating contest, hula hoop contest, water balloon toss, beer garden and much more.

Time is running out for cooks to enter this year’s competition. The entry deadline is Sept. 1. Have your barbecue judged by official KCBS Judges in four categories: Pork Ribs, Chicken, Pork, Beef Brisket.

1st place: $125
2nd place: $100
3rd place: $75
4th place: $50
5th place: $25
Grand Champion $500
Reserve Grand Champion $200
