According to a press release, at about 10:30 yesterday morning, Coos Bay Police responded to the 700 block of south 4th Street to a report of a domestic disturbance involving an armed man inside an apartment. The report stated the man was with his girlfriend and was threatening to shoot himself. Shortly after police arrived, the girlfriend left the residence and was moved to a safe area. Residents in the area and staff at Marshfield High School were also notified of the situation. Police made contact with the man, identified as 22-year-old Matthew Rhoat, and began negotiations. After three hours, Rhoat left the residence and surrendered to police peacefully. Rhoat was taken to Bay Area Hospital for a mental health evaluation.
