SWOCC Music Department Performs Concerts
The Music Department at Southwestern Oregon Community College is celebrating 48 years of making great music. They are pleased to present their fall concert series at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts on the SWOCC campus. These are FREE concerts and open to the public beginning at 7pm each night, although donations are always gratefully accepted for the SWOCC music department.
Tonight, the SWOCC Symphonic Choir, under the direction of David Aakre, will present their end of the year concert. The choir will be accompanied by Thomas Collins and perform a number of holiday and traditional choir works for large choirs. David Aakre is the new Symphonic choir director at SWOCC. He has been very active in the community music scene locally for many years and we are very excited to have him at SWOCC for the community choir.
Tomorrow night, the SWOCC Orchestra, under the direction of Mark Allen, will present their fall concert at 7pm in the PAC. The Orchestra will perform a variety of orchestral works from the 18th and 19th century even including some holiday favorites from the 20th century.
On Wednesday November 28, the SWOCC Vocal Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Brett Aakre and accompanied by Charlotte McLauchlin on piano, will present arrangements for vocal jazz choir. Brett is also new to Southwestern this term coming to us fresh out of SOU with his Masters degree in music. Also performing on this concert will be Oregon Coast Lab Bands’ top performing group “Evolution”, under the direction of Professor Mike Turner is Director of Music at SWOCC and Executive Music Director at Oregon Coast Lab Bands. Earlier in the term, Evolution was invited to the Medford Jazz Festival on October, 11, 12, & 13 where they performed 5 sets over those 3 days. They will be performing a variety of Big Band hits from the 1940’s through the 2000’s including several holiday favorites in swing and rock styles.
