Payroll employment in Coos County declined by over 200 jobs in December. Seasonal reductions in leisure and hospitality totaled 80 over the month. Construction employment fell by 20 and mining and logging employment dropped by 60, with published layoffs in the mining sector accounting for most of the decline.

Government employment decreased by 40, with 30 losses in local education and 10 losses in Indian tribal local government. Food manufacturing fell by 30, with the delayed crab season pushing back processing activities into January. Professional and business services had the largest estimated gain among Coos County industries, up by 20.

Over the year, a number of industries posted employment gains. Those adding jobs included 210 in professional and business services, 30 in retail trade and wood product manufacturing, and 130 in educational and health services. Private sector industries losing jobs were 40 in construction; 60 in transportation, warehousing and utilities; and 90 in leisure and hospitality. Total government employment declined by 130 jobs since December 2011.

Curry County total employment fell by 80 jobs in December. Leisure and hospitality continued its seasonal reductions, down by 50. Construction employment also fell by 50 over the month. Trade, transportation and utilities and local government saw job increases in December.
