NWS SPECIAL STATEMENT – Sneaker Waves

National Weather Service

NWS SPECIAL STATEMENT: A large and distant central Pacific storm is generating a very high long period swell. These high-energy, fast-moving waves will reach the coast later Friday night and persist into this weekend.

West swell of 8 to 12 feet will produce average breaking waves of 16 to 19 feet and could result in infrequent, but powerful waves up to 25 feet along the coast.

It is advised that those along the coastline use extra caution. Swells of this type have the potential of producing sneaker waves… which can rapidly run up beaches. Jetties and exposed rocks that seem safe to walk on can suddenly become washed over by these powerful waves.

Remember to stay far back from the surf and away from logs or debris. Never turn your back to the water.
