5.1 Magnitude Earthquake off Coos Bay

K-DOCK 92.9

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook off the Oregon Coast this afternoon around 2:25 PM about 114 miles west of Coos Bay. The earthquake happened at a depth of more than 6 miles. Geology experts agree that the Cascadia Subduction Zone is overdue for a major earthquake that can generate a 9.0 magnitude quake lasting for 2 to 3 minutes and generating a significant tsunami that will hit the shoreline in 15 to 20 minutes after the earthquake. To learn more about the possibilities of a major quake and tsunami where you live there will be an informational presentation coming up on March 21, 7pm at the Hales Center on the SWOCC campus from Oregon Emergency Management.
