Man From Myrtle Point Gets Lost In Woods
A man from Myrtle Point is safe after getting lost in the woods. On March 31st, the Coos County Sheriffs office received a call regarding a missing and possibly endangered person who had been separated from his party. 48-year-old Gene Ivan McLaughlin had gone into a wilderness area, south of Powers, to pick mushrooms with a friend. He became separated and did not return to the vehicle as planned. Friends searched into the night with no luck. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including a Coast Guard helicopter and a K-9 unit searched into Monday night and Tuesday. By Tuesday afternoon, McLaughlin was located, wet and cold from being out for two nights and a day. The Myrtle Point man had wondered over three miles and was found in the Sucker Creek drainage area, west of China Flats. He had minimal clothing and was not prepared to spend a length of time outdoors.
