Prescribed Burns Will Remove Excess “Fuel”

K-DOCK 92.9

Forest landowners in the Bay area may be conducting prescribed burns on their lands this Spring. The controlled use of fire removes excess vegetation that could pose a wildfire hazard later on during the Summer. It also prepares the ground for replanting of trees.

In spring, many forest landowners set fires on purpose. These prescribed burns remove woody debris. Getting rid of this excess “fuel” pays off now and later. Burning under the right weather conditions takes smoke up and away from communities, keeping the air clean. And in Summer, when wildfires occur, they’ll be less likely to destroy timber and wildlife habitat. Learn more about prescribed forest burning from the Oregon Department of Forestry.
