Renowned flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny will lead an all-star expedition into the heart of Jazz Noir on Sunday, July 14th at 2pm, when the Dmitri Matheny Group appears at the OIMB Boathouse in Charleston as part of the Oregon Coast Music Festival. The event is part of the DMG’s 50-city tour of the western United States.

The Dmitri Matheny Group, directed by flugelhornist and composer Matheny, features a cavalcade of jazz talent: saxophone colossus David Valdez, virtuoso pianist Nick Manson, rock steady bassist Chris Higgins and master drummer Alan Jones. The Dmitri Matheny Group’s popular Jazz Noir project offers a fresh spin on TV and movie themes plus a selection of new works, jazz classics and beloved standards from the Great American Songbook. Concert highlights include a Noir Medley of cinematic favorites and Matheny’s original Crime Scenes suite, a dreamlike series of vignettes linked together with voiceover narrative in the hardboiled detective style of Dashiell
Hammett and Raymond Chandler.

Celebrated for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique, American musician Dmitri Matheny has been lauded as “the first breakthrough flugelhornist since Chuck Mangione” (San Jose Mercury News). Matheny is an honors graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and the Berklee College of Music, Boston. First introduced to jazz audiences in the 1990s as the protégé of Art Farmer, Matheny has matured into “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players” (SF Chronicle), touring internationally and releasing nine critically acclaimed CDs. The longest-running music event on the Oregon Coast, the 35th Oregon Coast Music Festival is a two-week-long annual festival that draws 5,000 to its varied concerts in several Coos Bay area locations.
