Vintage Steam Engines This Weekend
Vintage tractors, antique steam engines and hit and miss motors will be on display during the South Coast Tractor Show on September 21st and 22nd Coos Bay. The event, sponsored by the Oregon Coast Historical Railway, will be held in conjunction with the Bay Area Fun Festival. Many of the tractors will join other equipment on display through Sunday at the Oregon Coast Historical Railway museum at 766 South First Street (Highway 101 northbound, across from McDonalds)in Coos Bay.
In addition to vintage tractors, the show will include more than two dozen antique flywheel motors called hit and miss for the distinctive popping and whooshing sound they make. Used from the 1890s to the 1940s, these four-stroke engines ran on kerosene, coal oil, gasoline and other fuels. Belts attached to their flywheels operated equipment that ranged from water pumps to feed grinders to washing machines. Owners of these chugging pieces of history will be coming from throughout the Pacific Northwest for this event. Participation is free, and admission will be by donation.
