Coos Bay Welcomes Tall Ships May 1st–11th

The brig Lady Washington and the topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain, in partnership with the Coos Bay Boat Building Center, are visiting the Coos Bay area May 1st – 11th. The ships will offer walk-on tours, public excursions, and educational programs for K-12 students. Lady Washington will also host a reconciliation ceremony with local native tribes. Here’s the ships’ public schedule:

5/2: Walk-on tours, 4pm to 5pm $3 donation per person requested.

5/3: Walk-on tours, 10am to 1pm $3 donation per person requested.

5/3: Evening Sail (Hawaiian Chieftain only), 6pm to 8pm, $43 all ages.

5/3-4: Battle Sails, 2pm to 5pm, $43-$63.

5/4: Adventure Sail (Hawaiian Chieftain only), 11am to 1pm, $39 all ages.

5/6-9: Walk-on tours, 4pm to 5pm $3 donation per person requested.

5/7: Evening Sail (Hawaiian Chieftain only), 6pm to 8pm, $33.

5/10-11: Walk-on tours, 10am to 1pm $3 donation per person requested.

5/10-11: Battle Sails, 2pm to 5pm, $43-$63.

5/10: Evening Sail (Lady Washington only), 6pm to 8pm, $43 all ages.

5/11: Adventure Sail (Lady Washington only), 11am to 1pm, $43 all ages.

Tickets are available now for all sailings, though they are expected to sell quickly. Call 800-200-5239 or buy online at www.historicalseaport.org. Battle Sails simulate an 18th century naval skirmish with real cannon firing real gunpowder, (but no cannon balls). Tickets are $63 adults, $53 students/seniors/active military, $43 children 12 and under. Adventure Sails and Evening Sails are family-oriented experiences offering opportunities to help raise a sail, learn a traditional sailor’s song, or take the helm of a real tall ship, conditions permitting. The Evening Sail on May 7th is valued priced at $33 a ticket for all ages. Tickets for the Evening Sail on May3rd and 10th are $43 each.

The Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw and the Coquille Indian Tribe will participate in a reconciliation ceremony with the crew of Lady Washington 11am to 1pm Sunday, May 5th. For details, call Tom Leahy, 541-217-4365, tommymcgee@hotmail.com.
