K-DOCK 92.9

The Coos Bay City Council has passed an ordinance prohibiting smoking in and on the lot of the Coos Bay Library. The ordinance passed with 5 yes votes and 2 no votes. Voting aye were Stephanie Kramer, Mark Dailey, Jennifer Groth, Tom Leahy and Brian Bowers. Voting nay were Mike Vaughan and Mayor Shoji.

The request came to the Council from the Library Board of Trustees. The Board indicated that smoking close to the building has created a nuisance with smoke and cigarette butts. Library Board Chair Bruce Bennett states, “The Library Board expressed concerns about smoke coming into the building, cigarette butts around the building, and people hanging out around the library to smoke.”
