Neighbors In Need Helping The Community
For the National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, a number of informational pieces for students, staff, faculty, and community members are available for download. Use these sheets to increase your knowledge on the issues of poverty. Download the complete local resource list here.
The Mission of the Neighbors In Need (NIN) Coalition is to facilitate
the Federal and State 10-year plan to eliminate homelessness in Coos County. Although NIN Coalition meetings have been occurring for over 6 years, we only registered with the IRS as a non-profit in August 2013. Our NIN Board manages, prints and distributes a Pocket Resource Guide and NIN Brochure for the greater Coos Bay area; facilitates the monthly NIN Coalition meetings; we assist with the Annual Homeless Person Memorial by leading a clothing drive and soup and bread feed; and the Annual Point in Time Count.
Our NINCAT primary service is to pay for local transportation needs
We volunteer for The Nancy Devereux Center to re-distribute donated pizza to community members in need. We also re-distribute donated vegetables and fruits from the Wednesday Farmers Market to shelters and to people who are homeless or living in extreme poverty.
Some of our recent NINCAT actions have been to assist members to obtain birth certificates, ID Cards, and educational advancement. We encourage opportunities for self-healing through support groups and creative expressionism. A new program is to pay for laundry washing at local laundromats for neighbors in need. We fund our programs by grants, door-to-door collections and private donations.
Starting November 24th, current registered NINCATs will sell fudge to community members as a sweet introduction for local residents to buy fudge and to learn about all of our NIN services and programs.
This will be our first formal introduction to the community and will last for two weeks. For more information, call Bittin 541-217-4095.
