Animal Friends Blessing At Mingus Park

The Blessing of Our Animal Friends on Sunday, October 1st at 1pm in Mingus Park, gathers pets and people together to celebrate the bonds of love and trust. Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and Emmanuel Episcopal Church continue a centuries-old tradition. The service will be held whatever the weather at the park’s playground area on 10th Street in Coos Bay. The Pacific Cove Humane Society will join, providing treats for the pets.

St. Francis is honored as the patron saint of animals and the environment. Pastor Jon Strasman and Intern Claire Ackley of Gloria Dei and Pastor Christy Close Erskine of Emmanuel, will lead the service with readings, a homily and song. After, they will give an individual blessing to each animal and their human companion.

Pet owners may bring their dogs, cats and other family pets to the outdoor service. They are requested to have dogs on a leash and to be certain that they are friendly with other animals. Small animals, such as cats, birds and rabbits, should be brought in carriers. Photos of pets that would be too difficult to bring to the park may be brought for a blessing as well as photos or ashes of pets and are specially remembered.
