Apartment Fire In Coos Bay–No Deaths

On Thursday, March 14th at about 1am, the Coos Bay Fire Department responded to an apartment fire at the Myrtle Arms Apartments at 613 Central Avenue in Coos Bay. Coos Bay Police were the first to arrive and immediately began evacuating the building. Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter and completed evacuating the residents of the building due to the heavy smoke throughout the structure. The fire in apartment #5 was brought under control within 15 minutes.

The occupant of the apartment, 51-year-old Joe Eldridge, was treated by medical personnel at the scene for minor smoke inhalation. 31 of the 32 occupants of the building were allowed to return to their apartments after the investigation, with the exception of Eldridge, whose apartment suffered moderate fire, heat, and smoke damage. The estimated loss was $40,000.00.

Nineteen firefighters, three engines, and two support units responded to the fire. Firefighters were on the scene for almost three hours. The investigation is continuing into the cause of the fire, however, it is not considered suspicious at this time. Fire officials stated that the smoke alarm system in the building did operate properly and alerted the residents.
