Bandon Resident Person Of Interest In Possible Homicide

Coy Smith

The Coos County 911 dispatch center received at least two phone calls reporting an altercation at a residence on Bills Creek Road just outside of the city limits of Bandon on October 3rd at 11:30pm. When officers arrived they found 42-year-old William Mathew Drews, believed to be a resident of California, lying on the ground outside of the residence. Drews was taken to Southern Coos Hospital in Bandon but declared dead upon his arrival at the hospital.

Given the fact that this incident was described in the 911 calls and by witnesses as an altercation involving Drews, his death is being treated as a possible homicide.

The police have interviewed several witnesses and have identified a person of interest in this case. This person is Bandon resident, 40-year-old Coy Daniel Smith. Smith’s current whereabouts are unknown. The Sheriff’s office is asking if anyone who knows the location of Mr. Smith to call the Sheriff’s office with that information.

The Coos County Major Crime Team has been activated. Officers from Coos Bay, Bandon and North Bend Police, Oregon State Police, Coquille Tribal Police and the District Attorney’s office responded to assist in the investigation. Anyone who has information regarding this case, especially the location of Mr. Smith, is asked to call the Coos County Sheriff’s office.
