Blue Ribbon Winners Announced In Myrtle Point

The topic of the next Oregon State University Master Food Preservers workshop will be the winners of the blue ribbon held on Saturday, August 24th. The workshop is set for 10am to 1pm. The location has changed to the Coos County Extension Office in Myrtle Point.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of prize-winning pies including different techniques and recipes for making pie dough, how to handle the dough, and tips on what makes a pie great. Hopefully each participant will walk away with enough confidence to make an apple pie to enter in the 2014 Coos County Fair Apple Pie Contest, the winner of which receives a new stove donated by Daugherty’s Maytag Home Appliance Center in North Bend.

Also on the agenda will be tips for preparing prize-winning preserved foods. Those who hope to enter items in the county fair will appreciate the advice on how to process, prepare and label fair-quality foods by evaluating canned and dried fruits and vegetables, jams and jellies, meat, fish and pickled products. Workshop participants will be asked to bring in samples of their own preserved items, if they wish, for evaluation. For more information or to register, call 541-572-5263, ext. 292. Class size is limited to 15 participants.
