Coos Bay City Council Approves Ordinance

The Coos Bay City Council has approved an ordinance that will assist the city’s codes enforcement department.  The Coos Bay Vacant Property Registration Regulations identify a procedure and requirements for vacant properties to be adequately secured and maintained.  Currently, the city has 90 derelict residential properties that are unsightly and unsafe. These are properties that have been foreclosed on or are vacant. City officials say the properties sometimes support squatter activity and facilitate potentially dangerous health conditions on or near the properties. The ordinance would require the properties to be registered with the police department. It would also require ongoing maintenance and monthly inspections.  The council approved the ordinance following a public hearing on Tuesday.
