Coos Bay Man Killed On Hwy 36 near Junction City

There is an ongoing investigation by Oregon State Police into the cause of a fatal traffic crash at the intersection of Highway 99W and Highway 36 near Junction City, Oregon. A Dodge Caravan driven by 43-year-old Brian D. Cole, from Sandy, Oregon, was southbound on Highway 99W on October 25th, entering the intersection with Highway 36 on a green light when it was involved in a collision with an Acura Integra occupied by two people. The Acura was traveling eastbound on Highway 36 and failed to stop for a red stop signal when it was struck in the driver side by the Dodge Caravan.

Cole was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The Acura’s 55-year old male driver, James Charles Richmond, and 55-year old wife/passenger, Barbara M. Richmond, both from Coos Bay, were taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend. James Richmond was pronounced dead at the hospital. Barbara Richmond was treated for serious injuries. All three involved people were using safety restraints.

Trooper Kyle Bachmeier is the lead investigator. OSP was assisted at the scene by Lane Rural Fire/Rescue, Junction City Police Department, and ODOT. The highway was partially closed for 3 hours during incident response and investigation.
