Fatal Boating Accident Near Winchester Bay

The Douglas County Marine Patrol Division is investigating a fatal boating accident that happened near Winchester Bay yesterday. According to the press release a 16-and-a-half-foot aluminum Tracker Marine Vessel with four people on board were crabbing in the bay. On the way to port the engine quit and wouldn’t restart. The vessel drifted with the outgoing tides when it drifted to the north jetty and was battered by incoming waves. The United States Coast Guard was summoned but the boat overturned before they could arrive. Three occupants were successfully rescued, and 76-year-old Judith Haney Anderson of Salem was rescued and flown to Lower Umpqua Hospital where lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. All occupants of the boat were wearing personal floatation devices. The incident appears to be related to a faulty battery.
