Fatal Collision Near Myrtle Point

Police are seeking witnesses of a head-on collision that took the life of a Coos Bay man. The crash happened on Highway 42 near Myrtle Point last night and closed a portion of the highway. Oregon State Police say 51-year-old, Daniel Thomas McCutcheon  died at the scene after a white, Nissan Frontier pick up (photo) crossed the center line and collided with the car he was a passenger in. The driver, 57 year old Kathy Ann Hebert, was taken to OHSU in Portland with critical injuries. 22-year-old Garrison Chance Demain of Coquille was operating the Nissan. He was transported to Coquille Valley Hospital.  Authorities say speed, alcohol, and reckless driving may have been contributing factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.  OSP Troopers say there may have been witnesses to the crash and the Nissan’s driving prior to the accident that have not been interviewed. If you have any information, contact the Coos Bay OSP office at 541-269-5000.

Note: A second photo of the crash was sent along with this release. We opted not to use that photo to respect the family of McCutcheon.
