Former North Bend High School Principal Hires Law Firm Over Dismissal

Bill Lucero

Bill LuceroFormer North Bend High School Principal Bill Lucero has notified the District that he has retained a Portland law firm to review a potential lawsuit over his removal from his position following a settlement agreement between the district and the American Civil Liberties Union.  Lucero was removed in May from his position as principal and reassigned to the vice principal position at the middle school following an investigation into allegations that he made some students read the bible as punishment and other alleged homophobic incidents. Attorney, Roland Iparraguirre said the firm is focused on the district’s actions related to Lucero, and they are also concerned about whether the Oregon Department of Education demonstrated the ability to conduct a fair, complete and objective investigation. In the letter to the district, attorneys from RI Law Group stated, “The District unlawfully exchanged Mr. Lucero’s reputation, profession, and health, for protection against its own misdeeds, all while pretending that the District and its attorneys were representing Mr. Lucero’s interests.” It went on to read “The District then compounded the damage to Mr. Lucero by repeatedly instructing him not say anything to defend himself.” The firm has given the district two weeks to the claims of economic and non-economic damages as well as damage to his reputation resulting in mental and physical health effects.
