Gas Leak In North Bend Causes Temporary Evacuation

All is well this morning in North Bend after a contractor with the Oregon Department of Transportation bored into a Northwest Natural gas line during construction. According to Dawn Johnson, Public Information Officer from Northwest Natural Gas, the line was penetrated at about 11:30 last night and caused a leak. Officials closed down a portion of Highway 101 between Colorado and Connecticut from 12:55 to 1:55am. According to residents in that area, a door-to-door temporary evacuation took place until the leak could be contained. Johnson reminds the public that these kinds of incidents happen about 500 times per year and people are urged to call 811 before digging to locate gas lines and other buried utilities. Northwest Natural reminds people that any odor of natural gas inside your home or business may indicate a leak. If you smell rotten eggs, leave the area and contact Northwest Natural by calling 800-882-3377.
