Kiwanis Awards Scholarships To Coos County Students

The Kiwanis Club of Coos Bay has awarded ten $2,000 scholarships to
local students. The scholarship committee received applications from
every high school in Coos County and one from a home schooled graduate. Scholarships were awarded to former recipient Carli Bowman Lancaster and first time recipients; Reno Ancheta, Angeline Brown, Samantha Bruno, Alexis Busso, Wlnsvey Campos, Brandon Crutchfield, Alaina Goodwin, Megan Huckabee and Jacob Mcavoy.

Eligible candidates for the scholarships are graduating seniors or
former graduates from a Coos County High School as well as GED and home schooled graduates. They must have applied to, been accepted by or attained eligibility to attend a two-year or four-year accredited
educational institution, vocational/technical school, or graduate

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers and local Kiwanis
projects are supported by various fund-raising activities including the August Salmon Barbecue, as well as club participation in community festivals and other events. In addition to the very successful and ongoing scholarship program, Coos Bay Kiwanis stocks ‘Grandma’s Closet’ – offering clothing and supplies for needy kids at Madison and Sunset schools; administers the ‘BUG’ program to help third-graders “bring up their grades; partners with Wal Mart to give away free shoes and socks to kids in need; brings some Christmas joy to deserving families in need of a little help via the Adopt-a-Family project; helps with the annual Christmas light show at Shore Acres; and other events that benefit youth in our community.Anyone who would like to be a part of the Kiwanis team is welcome to attend one of the Wednesday noon meetings at the Red Lion in Coos Bay, or contact the club at P.O.
