Man Calls Phone–Unknowingly Sets Up Own Arrest

A Coos Bay man, on parole as a sex offender, is in custody today on new charges. The Coos County Sheriffs office responded to Ellen Road in the Bunker Hill area on March 24th to a report of a male on a females’ property, reportedly causing a disturbance by breaking a window, causing damage at the residence and refusing to leave. Upon arrival, police found the suspect had fled the area, but had dropped his mobile phone. The female identified the suspect as 39-year-old Shaun Cole Nix.

Shortly after, Nix called his own phone and asked to meet the person who found it, not realizing he was talking to the police. A deputy answered the phone and used only his first name, telling Nix that he found the phone and would meet him at a business in the Bunker Hill area near where the phone was found. When Nix returned to the scene, he saw officers and attempted to flee, but was soon taken into custody. Nix has been charged with Second Degree Criminal Mischief and Trespass, Parole Violation and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. Nix is currently lodged in the Coos County jail.
