Michael Ames Coos Bay PD Press Release

On 5-28-12 at 9:25 am Officers of the Coos Bay Police Department attempted to serve an arrest warrant on Michael Ames after locating his vehicle at the Edgewater Motel. The previous day, Officers had received a report of Michael Ames stalking his estranged girlfriend. During that investigation, Officers learned that there were warrants for the arrest of Ames.

The Officers learned that Ames was a registered guest at the Edgewater and went to his room for contact. After knocking and announcing their presence at the door of Ames’ room, Ames fired one round from inside the room, through the front door of the room, which narrowly missed the officers outside. The officers immediately sought better cover and began monitoring the room.

An evacuation of the Edgewater as well as neighboring Fred Meyer and Safeway stores occurred. Traffic was restricted in the area which also affected residents of the nearby Lucky Logger RV park.

The Coos County Emergency Response Team and the Oregon State Police SWAT team responded to assist in the operation. An intense and ongoing attempt to contact and negotiate with Ames via phone and loud speaker continued for several hours.

At about 3:00 pm OSP SWAT breached the door to Ames room. Gas and diversion devices were used in an attempt to bring Ames out of the room. There was no response, and Coos Bay Police K9 ‘Athos’ was also used to search the room.

SWAT officers then entered the room and located Ames deceased from a self inflicted gunshot wound to his head. Officers discovered a 9mm hand gun, an AR-15 rifle, and a significant stock pile of ammunition near Ames’ body.

Traffic and business in the area was restored at approximately 4:30 pm.

The investigation is continuing at this time.
