ORCCA To Conduct Homeless Count

The annual Point In Time Homeless Count is schelued to take place Thursday, January 31st throughout Coos and Curry Counties. This year, the survey is being organized by Oregon Coast Community Action, in collaboration with a number of community partners, including Neighbors In Need and the Green Spot and will help to determine the kind of funding and resources needed in our community for homeless relief and outreach.

This Homeless Count is part of a national initiative to identify the number of people who are struggling to find permanent housing and shelter. The survey is an chance to learn more about the individuals and families experiencing homelessness and the factors that are prohibiting them from obtaining housing. The results will provide a snapshot of those struggling with homelessness and will provide information that can help policymakers and agencies gain an understanding of the areas that are most in need.

Many of those experiencing homelessness in our community are in outlying and isolated areas. To combat this obstacle and obtain the most accurate numbers, surveyors will be conducting a combination of street and shelter counts. This ensures that surveyors will have the ability to reach out to all individuals that lack permanent housing, including those that are living on the street or in the woods and those who are temporarily staying in shelters or transitional housing. During the count, volunteers will have emergency blankets and dog food available for individuals and families who need it for their pets. The Green Spot will also be offering ‘stone soup’ meals throughout the day and clothes for any individuals in need.

The Point In Time Homeless Count will be conducted by ORCCA staff, Neighbors In Need members, and other volunteers from the community. Volunteers are still needed to conduct the survey in the Coos Bay and North Bend area. Anyone who is interested in volunteering, call Oregon Coast Community Action at 541-435-7080 extension 366.
