***Police Seek Information After Radio Tower Collapses***

The Coos County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help from the public after guy wires supporting a Repeater Tower were cut ultimately causing the collapse of the tower. Investigators responded this morning and determined that sometime over the weekend someone had vandalized the site, cutting the wires that supported the 150-foot tower.

The Repeater site is critical for emergency communication for loggers, fire departments, Ham Radio Operators and others. The tower is critical to many operations that take place on forest lands east of Coos Bay. Without the tower, it poses a risk to responders and could greatly impact logging and firefighting operations. The tower and many of the repeaters were destroyed in the collapse. Initial damage estimates exceed $60-thousand dollars.

A reward is being offered for information leading to the identification and conviction of the parties responsible. First Degree Criminal Mischief is a Class C-Felony. Anyone with information should contact the Coos County Sheriff’s Office at (541) 396-7830.
