Sewage Overflow Spill in Eastside – Road Closure Tomorrow

Earlier today the City of Coos Bay received a phone call from a citizen stating that there was significant amount of water flooding private property which had been occurring since February 28th. A City crew arrived at the location in the Eastside area of Coos Bay within minutes of receiving the phone call. It was determined that a deficiency in the sanitary sewer force main caused flooding along D Street between 1st Avenue and 2nd Avenue. The flooding was a combination of rain water and raw sewage. They immediately started cleaning up the spill and bypass pumping the failed sewer main.  A sanitary sewer overflow of 261,000 gallons has been estimated, and it was reported to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Oregon Emergency Response System, and Oregon Department of Agriculture. It is unknown how much if any amount of sewage entered the waterway downstream.  The City is mobilizing a contract crew Saturday morning March 3rd to complete the repair. D Street between 1st Avenue and 2nd Avenue will be closed starting at 7 a.m. tomorrow while the contractor makes the repair.
