Students Compete In MathCounts Contest

Middle school Mathletes from southwest Oregon schools will compete in a local contest of the national MATHCOUNTS program on February 21st at the Boys and Girls Club in Coos Bay. The competition has been organized by the Southwest Chapter of the Professional Engineers of Oregon. A total of eight schools and approximately 60 students will compete. Schools represented are: Coquille Valley Middle School, Brookings Harbor Christian School, Marshfield High School, North Bend Middle School, Riley Creek School, Millicoma Middle School, Sunset Intermediate School, and Powers Junior High School.

Teachers and students have been preparing for the competition since the fall. Students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches. Subjects include algebra, probability, statistics and geometry. Winners will receive trophies and will advance to the state MATHCOUNTS finals, to be held in the month of March.

MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. The program focuses on middle school students, who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability. MATHCOUNTS inspires excellence, confidence and curiosity through fun and challenging math programs, providing today’s students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the 2013 MATHCOUNTS competition will consist of more than 6,000 schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U. S. territories and Department of Defense and State Department affiliated schools.
