Update: Haney Had Warrants, Possessed Suspected Illegal Drugs

Investigators from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office and Coos County Crash Team are continuing their investigation into last Tuesday’s fatal motor vehicle crash on Highway 101 near Lakeside. A vehicle operated by 35-year-old Carl R. Haney, from Gold Beach, caused the crash while fleeing the Oregon State Police. Investigators have confirmed Haney had outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants for Failure to Appear out of Jackson and Morrow counties. OSP saw the vehicle traveling north on Highway 101 near the McCullough Bridge and attempted to stop it. The vehicle’s driver failed to yield and sped away near milepost 223, where there is a small bridge over Spinreel Road. Haney’s vegicle attempted to pass other vehicles and struck a guardrail, sending it into oncoming traffic. Haney was not the registered owner of the vehicle he was driving. Investigators also found small amounts of suspected illegal drugs in Haney’s pants. The investigation continues including awaiting toxicology results from an autopsy.
